Time to be festive!

Stolen from[livejournal.com profile] tabula_x_rasa

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?  I have never had egg nog, so I’ll go hot chocolate. I don’t drink it all that much, I’m more of a tea and coffee person. Hot chocolate isn’t something I associate particularly with Christmas either. Although I did have a rather awesome mint hot chocolate at Costa in the run up to Christmas last year.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Wrapped up in massive knitted stocking which my parents got years and years ago and a craft market. I used to drag the stocking to their room and it was bigger than me! There tend to be things on top of the stocking as well if they’re an awkward shape and won’t fit (mainly, in my case, calendars).

3. Coloured lights on tree/house or white? We used to have some coloured lights round our porch, but they broke a few years back. Now we have white ones on both the tree and the house.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No. Although I sell it at my work.

5. When do you put your decorations up? Normally the second weekend of December? Sometimes the third, depending on when Christmas falls. We would have got our tree yesterday and put it up, but we were away so currently only have the outside lights up.

6. What is your favourite holiday dish? Cranberry sauce. Christmas is the one time of the year when my love of cranberry sauce is deemed appropriate. I tend to eat it all year round in my sandwiches regardless. Also, as an extra, gammon! I really like my food so really, it’s pretty much all of it.

7. Favourite holiday memory as a child? I don't know! There's so much! /o\

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I figured it out. I have much older cousins who we spend Christmas with who didn’t even bother with pretending. So, as a result, the story in our family was that Santa brought you presents until you were a certain age and then your parents took over. I can’t remember exactly when I got it but since then there have been numerous hilarious times, including me having to ask “Santa” (my brother didn’t know at the time, so I was being careful) if she was hypo. Hell yeah diabetic parents?

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? It depends. Sometimes, if we’re away for Christmas, we open a present of slippers or something so we don’t take both the old ones and new ones. It’s not normal though, although my brother has convinced my Mum on several occasions because he can be incredibly impatient.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? Tinsel and lights and baubles and everything! I think coordinated trees are nice and all, but they just don’t work in our house. We have loads of decorations we’ve got over the years, loads of which we got at craft fairs and don’t match at all. I love it. Also, about a decade back we started picking out a decoration each year so that when we leave home we’ll have things to put on the tree.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? I love snow so long as I can get back inside relatively easily. I did not enjoy the time I nearly got stuck at college due to snow. Buses, gah.

12. Can you ice skate? Yes, but not very well. We had a temporary ice skate over the Christmas period in Cambridge for a couple of years, but the company’s gone bust so it won’t be there this year. I never particularly enjoyed it, but last year I went with a large group of friends (including some alarmingly good skaters!) and had a fantastic time.

13. Do you remember your favourite gift? Ok, so the main thing which jumped out at me when I saw this question was when I got my laptop. That was five years ago this Christmas and my laptop is on its last legs. The main thing though was when I got it, I burst into tears. It was just so unexpected and wonderful. I sat in the lounge, sobbing, going “but I only asked for a watch.” My Mum was rather worried that I was upset that I hadn’t been given a watch and quickly gave me that too. That wasn’t the case, I was just really overwhelmed.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? I honestly don’t know. There are bits of Christmas I love and bits I hate.

15. What is your favourite holiday dessert? Mince pies. Oh my goodness, I love mince pies so much. We get the most amazing ones from the local WI. Warm with brandy butter. Absolutely gorgeous.

16. What is your favourite holiday tradition? I have a few favourites actually! I couldn’t narrow it down any further. One is going to get our Christmas tree. The greengrocer’s down the road, where I now work, sells Christmas trees and we get one there every year. We all go down as a family, pick one out and then all carry it home. Christmas is also the only time I go to church. I’m not religious and most of my family are atheists, but we often go to Christmas Eve services with my one vaguely religious aunt and it’s just nice and quiet and kind of beautiful.

17. What tops your tree? A star which we put a light in so it twinkles.

18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? I really like giving people things. Finding them something just right for them. This year though has been a bit hard as I just can’t face Christmas shopping. Too many people.

19. Candy Canes? Not really. I love mints, but I can never finish them in one go, so I end up wrapping them back up and they go sticky and not so nice. Also, as mints go, they’re not great.

20. Favourite Christmas show? I’m going to take a very loose definition of show here and saw PANTO. It is magical and ridiculous and wonderful. I’ve been in several (and once nearly got crushed by a piece of scenery) and had so much fun.

21. Saddest Christmas song? Not really sure? I’m not a big fan of sad Christmas songs so I don’t really listen to them.

22. What is your favourite Christmas song? Fairytale of New York. Kirsty MacColl just sounds so wonderful sarcastic to me. That and We Three Kings. I can play it and it just sounds awesome and moody and powerful.

23. Favorite Christmas movie? A Muppet Christmas Carol. I adore that. It’s just wonderful and I always try and watch it with my Dad.

24. How long do you leave up Christmas decorations? Until 12th Night.

25. What kind of cookies do you leave for Santa? NO COOKIES FOR SANTA. Mince pies and sherry for Santa, with some carrots for the reindeer.
