Day Nine

In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

to my trade, Skyfall, 260 words

Day 10

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. It can be a detailed, thoughtful analysis, or a squeeful, joyful post. Or maybe a combination of the two. Make a recs list, link to their archives or master lists or websites, maybe create a Fanlore page for them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ok, so this was really hard for me. Because I love pretty much all creators I know? But I eventually decided I’d talk a little bit about paperclipbitch. There’s just something about her writing style which I really love. She is the author who has dragged me unknowingly into numerous different fandoms over the years simply by writing something in them and me deciding I might as well read because it’s Jenn, so I know I’ll enjoy it regardless if I know the canon or not. She is the reason I got into X-Factor RPF and bandom. And the most awesome thing is that this writer I’ve admired for years is really a lovely person and I get to call my friend now. And I think that’s such a wonderful thing about fandom, that no matter how talented people are and intimidating people might seem, you can still become friends with them.

And now some recs!

not in this new romantic way, Doctor Who, Amy/Rory, Band AU
This is an AU where Amy takes her stories of an imaginary friend and forms a folk duo with Rory. I love folk music and this is just lovely and just really believable.

I’ve suffered shipwrecks
, The Avengers, Clint/Loki, Steve/Thor, Natasha/Bruce, Jane/Darcy, Clint/Natasha, no powers AU
This is a coffee shop AU. Except it’s not really about that. I don’t know how to explain it. The characters still have all the sharp and rugged edges, they just live lives where Clint and Natasha used to date and now run a coffee shop and probably know each other too well. Also, I don’t really ship the pairings in this and yet I loved it.

sheepish wolves series
, bandom, supernatural and high school au, numerous pairings
They’re all werewolves and ghosts and vampires (and some humans) and they all go to high school together (apart from the vampires, because of the whole daylight issue). I’m kind of bad at reccing things. It’s really great? Go read it? Yay?

Day 11

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So, this probably isn’t the greatest piece of original canon that I could share with you guys because it's not the most easily available (although you can stream it online some places now!). I am going to be talking about Campion. Specifically the tv series based off the Albert Campion books by Margery Allingham. The thing I love about them is that the earlier Campion books, which the tv series is based on, are just an amazing example of the Golden Age of Crime. They are silly and ridiculous and really good mysteries. Also, they’re funny. They’re supposed to be funny. Part of the point of Campion is as a character he’s affectionately poking fun at Lord Peter Whimsey.

Now, to the tv series! There are 8 stories in total, each two hours long split between two series of 4 episodes each. The most notable difference between the series is that Peter Davison (Albert Campion) sings the theme tune, consisting entirely of the word “la” in the first but not the second.

This is the part where I talk about the casting! I had read one of the books when I first saw an episode on tv (there was a repeat on one day, I fell in love very quickly) and I just sat and stared and went “Peter Davison *is* Albert Campion”. In the books he’s described as looking kind of bland, affable and a bit stupid but actually being deceptively intelligent. And just, Peter Davison captures that so well in my opinion. Another recurring character is Maggersfontein Lugg, Campion’s manservant. He was a burglar until he lost his figure. I happen to think his casting, played by Brian Glover, is also amazing.

Here, have some photographic proof!

The ever lovely and charming Albert Campion.

The not so charming or lovely, but delightful in his own way, Maggersfontein Lugg.

I had planned to go on and talk about a particular episode but that would require me to a) choose and b) rewatch all of them so I could manage a. I don’t have the time for that right now. Which is a great shame really. However, I will leave you with some screencaps from various episodes!

And to end, how the very first episode starts and one of my favourite lines.

Albert Campion, born May 20th 1900, name known to be a pseudonym. Education privileged, embarked on adventurous career 1929. Justice neatly executed. Nothing sordid, deserving cases preferred, police no object. Business address: 17 Bottle Street, Piccadilly, London, W1.

Specialist in fairy stories.

Day Twelve

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If at all possible, try to pick a smaller or rarer fandom, one that maybe doesn't have the following you feel it should.

Skipping!

Day 13

In your own space, ask for recs. Something as simple as "I like XYZ (where XYZ is a kink, a pairing, a trope, etc) - please rec me some." Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Ok. So. I consume a fairly wide variety of fanworks. I just like lots of different things. But, after thinking, some of my favourite things are ladies being awesome, cuddles and happy ever afters (not necessarily all at once though, apart from the happy endings bit. I just don’t like people remaining sad). So, recs anyone? Any fandom, any media!

Day 14

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist/circle/followers. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so

My immediate thought was about podfic fandom. Because I love podfic fandom so much. And then I remembered I’d kind of already written something about it (which can be found here). But then I realised, that’s all very me specific. And that’s not just why I love podfic fandom. I am grateful for podfic fandom in so many ways.

There’s this fantastic sense of community. Podfic fandom is a fandom in its own right in my opinion. We might not be a fandom in the traditional sense of all being fans of one show or film or something, but we all share a love for podfic and that’s what brings us together. I’ve found so many new and wonderful fandoms through podfic. Because I am so much more likely to listen to a story in an unfamiliar fandom read to me by a familiar, well-loved voice, than to read that same story by myself.

And I don’t really have the words to express my love properly. You rock podfic fandom.
